Treatment of Non Hazardous Waste to Landfill
From 30 October 2007, non-hazardous waste must be treated before it can be landfilled. This requirement stems from the Landfill Directive, which aims to reduce our reliance on landfill as a waste management option and minimise the environmental impact of landfill sites.
To meet this aim it is important that waste producers find better ways to manage their waste. The Environment Agency wants waste producers to take responsibility for their waste and make simple improvements in resource and waste management to deliver a better environment.
You can define 'treatment' by using the following 'three-point test'. All three criteria must be satisfied for all of the waste to have been treated:
1. It must be a physical, thermal, chemical or biological process including sorting.
2. It must change the characteristics of the waste.
3. It must do so in order to:
(a) reduce its volume; or
(b) reduce its hazardous nature; or
(c) facilitate its handling;
(d) enhance recovery.
