Andusia Sign Contract with Enva

Andusia are pleased to announce they have secured an RDF supply contract with recycling and resource recovery business, Enva. The collaboration will see 40,000 tonnes per annum of RDF exported via bulk vessel from Glasgow port to Sweden and Denmark over the next 2 years.

The new RDF export contract is the second contractual agreement between Andusia and Enva. Having also collaborated on a 20,000-tonne wood export contract in April this year.

The agreement comes after Enva were awarded a £24m waste management contract to treat and dispose of residual waste via a zero waste to landfill solution, from East and South Ayrshire Council. Household waste collected by the Council’s kerbside vehicles will be processed into RDF at Enva’s Linwood depot in Glasgow.

In 2021, SEPA (the Scottish Environment Protection Agency) reported 735,834 tonnes of ‘household and similar waste’ was landfilled in Scotland in 2020. Exporting RDF to EfW plants with capacity in Scandinavia will not only divert waste from Scottish landfills but also provide electricity and district heating to the EfW facilities local area.  Scandinavian EfW facilities are more efficient than their UK counterparts as they make use of RDF for not only electricity but also utilising the heat to warm homes.

In addition, bulk shipping of RDF is both a more cost-effective solution and an environmentally sustainable method of transport. The movement of RDF by sea is much more carbon beneficial compared to road transport.

Commenting on the agreement Enva’s Operations Director, Michelle Scott, said: “Harnessing the energy recovery value from waste that cannot practically be recycled makes both environmental and commercial sense. Whilst every effort is made to recover or treat waste as close to the point of production as possible this is not always feasible and, in these circumstances, export offers the most sustainable option.”

Andusia Director, Mark Terrell, ends ‘While there are plans for several new EfW facilities in Scotland to divert waste from landfill, these won’t come to fruition for a number of years, and RDF export is both the best economic and climate friendly option for Enva and just makes sense.’
