Across the UK and Europe, waste is always on the move – especially when it comes to the export of Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF). At Andusia, we collect RDF from our customers every day, come rain or shine, and it’s important that these logistics operate smoothly.
Recently one of our customers, Chambers Waste Management, invested in a new baler from Kadant PAAL to improve the efficiency of RDF production at their site in Guildford. Chambers were looking to replace their existing channel baler, which used plastic wire for processing RDF, with a more cost-effective solution that could offer greater reliability and higher throughput.
They turned to Kadant PAAL, a leading European manufacturer of baling presses, for a solution. Kadant’s PAAL DOKON range of balers have been designed for specific applications like RDF and SRF (Solid-Recovered Fuel) and offer good material bale density, meaning weight limits can be optimised when loading the bales onto trucks. This also results in a more profitable baling operation for Chambers.
The family-run waste firm were also impressed by the ability of the DOKON balers to adapt to the most demanding of conditions, particularly when there is high material throughput. The baling press they selected uses polypropylene twine which is perfectly suited for the wrapping and bale burning process.
As part of the design, the maintenance points on the baler have been made very accessible, which was an important consideration for Chambers as this means any worn parts can be easily replaced with minimal downtime, further increasing the longevity of the plant equipment. The company is also benefitting from Kadant PAAL’s ongoing support service to ensure continuity of production.
Steve Chamber said “Since installing the DOKON baler, we have noticed significant improvements in efficiency, making this a very cost-effective solution for us. The baler is easy to handle and great at compacting the waste and reducing its volume for ease of handling and storage. We are also very happy with the level of service provided by Kadant PAAL, they worked with us throughout the process to deliver a solution that would meet our every requirement.”
From Andusia’s perspective, the investment Chambers has made in the DOKON solution helps guarantee consistency of feedstock supply for the energy-from-waste plants our company serves across Europe.
“We have been working with Chambers for more than six years and over that time, have been collecting high quality RDF from them and exporting it for heat and power generation. The baler they have chosen will ensure this continues. Great bales makes our job easy,” said Mark Terrell, director of Andusia.
Kadant PAAL provides solutions for a wide range of customers including national waste carriers, independent waste operators, local authorities and facility managers.
“We understand every project is unique with each baling operation having its own particular requirements when it comes to processing materials. As such we can offer customers a wide range of options – these include channel, twin ram, closed end and metal baling presses,” said Dale Keeling, PAAL products technical sales manager at Kadant PAAL.
