KEA AS – Oslo

Efficient, just-in-time supply increasing gate fees by 80%

KEA AS had experimented with open hold shipping of RDF from the UK but were struggling to attract volume at the right price. They had searched for a few years but with no success, and had a requirement for loose RDF delivered to their bunker.

The existing solution wasn’t efficient: RDF arrived randomly in bulk and 3,000 tonnes then needed moving to an interim storage facility for bale opening which produced a mess at the port, resulting in a low gate fee.

The WTE plant was conscious about media reaction and rejected RDF from Italy due to reputational damage and adverse press coverage. So they needed a clean and efficient solution.

Therefore, we researched a supply chain and found a weekly service that gave a just-in-time solution that was clean and efficient, and raised gate fees by approximately 50%. This service involved splitting the RDF bales when they were loaded onto the destination country transport and were tipped into the bunker where they would break and open as loose RDF.

We improved the solution annually for three years, increasing volume by 200% and gate fees by 80%. Further supply chain improvements will result in the introduction of containers for winter 16/17, with a further increase in efficiency, volume and gate fee.
